Bainbridge Island School District’s
new facility required creative
solutions for its outdoor play areas,
paved surfaces and planting. Outdoor learning and play space was created in upper courtyards and lower paved and field areas, connected under “sky bridges” between building wings. To retain the water regime of a nearby wetland, onsite stormwater infiltration was achieved with porous concrete, reinforced grass pavement and below-grade storage tanks. Restoration planting was designed to both protect the wetland and offer students an outdoor lab space for education about plants, animals, water and earth. With CDC.
